Untitled Document Comments about STEPPING ON by Facilitators:

“Frances”attended our first workshop and had struggled with back pain and discomfort for quite some time. As a result of learning about the importance of
appropriate footwear she sought out a place that sold shoes designed for an aging individual with foot problems.
The fifth week, when we did our sharing at the beginning of the class she was bubbling to tell about her new footwear and how she no longer had pain. The
other participants sat up in their chairs and leaned in to hear her testimony. It is amazing.

Another woman who attended just came so she could prevent a fall. She finished the class and promptly because a co-leader so she could share her story and by coleading,
help others improved their lives as well.
A woman with MS came. By the third session she had brought a good friend (unannounced) because she was so appreciative of what she had already learned.
Everyone welcomed this new woman and the leaders brought her up to speed. She finished the class with everyone else.
Amember of our Stepping On program in the fall then also attended a Living Well program in the spring of 2011.
She told us leaders that because of taking the Stepping On class and doing her exercises faithfully every day, she now performs the strength exercises with 5
pounds, and is now able to climb the stairs in her apartment building without problems. Previously, she climbed the stairs with much difficulty, and
attributes her success to the Stepping On exercises.

“Ed”is an 85+ year old male who came to the Stepping On class to improve his balance. Ed is an avid walker and was finding that he was losing his balance on his
frequent walks.
He was very interested in the proper footwear session and talked privately to another male participant on where to get proper fitting shoes. At the next class Ed
reported that he usually purchased the cheapest shoes at a local discount store but during the previous week went to a better shoe store. He learned that he had been
wearing the wrong sized shoes, and he actually had one foot larger than the other.
He purchased two pairs of shoes, one for winter walks and another for summer walks.
Ed had tears in his eyes as he told the Stepping On class that it has been years since he was comfortable walking and that the proper fitting shoes has restored
his confidence to continue what he enjoys most
.
He reported that he had no idea that shoes could make such a difference in his balance, and is now back to walking his 2-3 miles per day. Ed also enjoyed learning
about how his vision can impact his balance. He went to the Vision Store and purchased a pair of appropriate sunglasses to decrease the amount of glare that he
was experiencing on his walks.
“I benefitted from the class after I had had a fall, which left me feeling insecure. I have to remember to keep up my exercises because I really benefitted from it.
… The great thing about the class is that it made me aware of exercises and I gained confidence.”
“I liked the course and I think it was beneficial. … My main problem was difficulty walking and I seem to have problems from the hips down and I walk a mile in that
fashion. I’m afraid I might collapse though after walking a mile so I take the elevator up to my apartment. I haven’t fallen after taking the class, and while I might
stagger I haven’t fallen.”
“It was great and fun and we met some new people that we have become friends with. The facilitator is a long term friend of mine. Not only did we learn some
things and participate in the exercises, but having a good time doing it was enjoyable.
“I liked the class. It improved my balance and I liked to concentrate on the balance. I would like to take it again with this facilitator.”
“It was very good. I did learn a lot. Some of it was common sense, but a lot of times we don’t have common sense. I learned I needed to slow down, and be more
observant of where I’m going. They gave you some hints to increase your strength and be able to do more with your legs. Overall, I thought the program was very very
good. We did a survey and the only thing I did put in that new information should be added to the class when it arises. The presenters were both super.”
“I thought it was great. The ladies (facilitators) that did it did a very good job. They were very devoted.”
“It was one of the best things I’ve ever done.”
“I really enjoyed it. It gives you confidence.”
“I thought they did such a good job of covering everything.”
“Because of the workshop, I bought myself a tiny shopping cart to walk around at the farmer’s market and I think other people might like that to hold onto.”
“I liked the class and the demonstrations were good and the speakers were wonderful.”
“It helped me and I’m using it everyday”“I think you guys are doing a great job”
“I can’t think of anything I want to complain about. I enjoyed the exercises and liked the group. It helps to do it when someone can show you how to do the
exercises.”
